Horizontal Software

Horizontal software is software designed for use across multiple industries rather than within a single, specialized industry. It typically performs a common task needed by many types of business or individual users.

Examples of horizontal market software include web browsers, image viewers, word processors, and spreadsheet applications. For instance, bank employees, hospital workers, and small business owners may all use the same spreadsheet program, even though they operate in different industries.

Because horizontal software serves a broad market, developers can reach a large number of customers. However, the design can be challenging since the user interface and features must accommodate a wide range of workflows. Some horizontal applications provide customization options or industry-specific add-ons without being developed exclusively for one market.

Horizontal Software vs Vertical Software

The opposite of horizontal market software is vertical software, which is designed for a particular industry or profession. For example, a general accounting program is horizontal software, while an application created specifically to manage the finances and billing requirements of law firms is vertical software.

NOTE: Horizontal software may also be called "horizontal market software," though the longer term is somewhat dated and not as common as "horizontal software."
