Copilot

Microsoft Copilot is an assistive AI tool that answers questions and provides suggestions via a conversational chat interface. It can also summarize documents, write new content, and generate custom images based on user input.

The digital companion helps with everyday tasks, including personal and work-related ones. For example, it can give you dinner recipe ideas or tips for improving your golf swing. If you need help writing a resume or cover letter, Copilot can produce a template to get you started.

Technology

Copilot uses several generative AI models to process user input. Below are three foundational technologies as of June 2024:

  1. Microsoft Prometheus - Microsoft's proprietary large language model (LLM)
  2. GPT-4 (Generative Pre-Trained Transformers version 4) - the same models used by OpenAI's ChatGPT
  3. DALL-E 3 - an AI model that generates and modifies images from textual input

Like other generative AI services, Microsoft Copilot is a tool that "learns" over time. It utilizes machine learning to enhance its responses based on user feedback and follow-up questions, helping it adapt to users' needs.

Availability

Copilot is integrated into Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 applications. It is also available as a standalone app and on the web at copilot.microsoft.com.

When using the Bing search engine, you may see Copilot suggestions alongside the search results.

The standard version of Copilot is free to use. If you want priority access to the latest models and faster responses, Copilot Pro is available as a monthly subscription.
